We talk to people every day who are convinced that waterless urinals smell or require more maintenance or are otherwise more work than traditional flushing urinals. Often these people have seen badly maintained waterless urinals or ‘low water use’ urinals and it’s fair to say that these often do smell bad. However, we absolutely guarantee that URIMAT waterless urinals, maintained correctly, do not smell. Here’s why.
Waterless urinals have less bacteria than traditional flushing urinals
Urine itself is sterile. Bacterial growth only happens at the point at which sterile urine mixes with water. It’s the reaction of the minerals in urine with the chemicals and minerals in water than causes bacteria to spread. Waterless urinals don’t contain any water so there’s much less bacterial growth than in a traditional urinal. Additionally, flushing urinals also propel droplets into the air, meaning that bacteria can then be spread into the rest of the washroom in a way that simply can’t happen with waterless urinals.
Waterless urinals are made of non-porous, ultra smooth material so no urine can stick to the bowl
URIMAT waterless urinals are made of a super-smooth non-porous unique polycarbonate blend which contains an anti-bacterial particulate and the patented bowl of the urinal is designed to slope steeply. These two factors together mean that there is no possibility that the urine can stick to the urinal bowl, one of the key causes of odour with traditional flushing urinals. In waterless urinals, 100% of the urine flows down into the urinal drain.
Waterless urinals contain a sealant trap which ensures that no odours can escape from the pipes back into the washroom
- Collected urine is channelled via a funnel into the odour trap and runs through the vertically positioned membrane into the sewage system.
- As soon as urine stops flowing, the membrane closes and in this way prevents gases from the sewage system from escaping.
- The integrated MB ActiveCube improves hygiene, reduces deposits and prevents the inside of the odour trap and the waste pipe becoming encrusted with organic matter, urine deposits and fats.
- After the MB ActiveCube has dissolved, the red surface beneath the transparent cover signals that the odour trap needs replacing.
- The vertical membrane technology guarantees that odours are completely sealed away and can withstand both negative and positive pressures, so it is impossible for gases from the sewage system to escape.
- Our new patented NRV technology (non-return valve) means no drain odour can escape into the washroom environment when the MB Trap servicing is carried out
Waterless urinals are easier to clean that traditional urinals
If you’ve encountered waterless urinals that smell it may well be because they have not been cleaned or maintained properly. The most important thing with waterless urinals is that you should not pour water down as this water will result in urinestone formation plus reduce the longevity of the MB Trap inserts, meaning that smells can then escape from the drains and pipes.
Because of their unique design, waterless urinals are generally much cleaner than traditional urinals. No urine can stick to the surface of the urinal bowl and the lack of flush means that no contaminated water from the flush can splash around the washroom. To keep waterless urinals clean you just need to wipe around the bowl with a soft cloth. No harsh chemicals are needed and no heavy scrubbing. Indeed, scrubbing is actively bad for waterless urinals as it can damage the super smooth urinal bowl surface thus giving bacteria a chance to get a hold.
Waterless urinals have much lower maintenance costs than traditional urinals
The URIMAT urinals collect urine in a patented drain trap, from where it is discharged into the drainage system without the need for a constant flush. This means that no limescale or urine stones can form in the pipework, reducing the possibility of blockages and significantly decreasing your urinal maintenance costs.
The urine is immediately passed into the waste system and none is retained within the urinal. The absence of water flushing means that the waste pipework does not become scaled up and block, causing a backup into the urinal.

Another big benefit we’ve noticed is that there’s no longer any smell in the urinals. It used to be absolutely awful. We had tiled floors so splashes of urine would go on the floors, and of course the boys can’t aim, but now the combination of vinyl floor and waterless urinals has completely removed the issue with odour. The waterless urinals have made a vast improvement to the washrooms in the school.

I can’t believe how fantastic they are and that they work so well without needing any running water. They always look clean, they always smell clean and they’re 100% easier to clean because there’s no water going into them. We’ve put a sign up explaining to the students what the waterless urinals are about. A few found it strange at first but the only comments we get are about how great it is that the urinals don’t smell like they used to. It’s such a big difference – if you go in the gents now it alway smells lovely and looks so clean.

As well as water saving, another big benefit of the URIMAT urinals is that they emit no odour. Some people find this a bit counter-intuitive, but it really works. There’s no smell at all which is a definite improvement on traditional flushing urinals. I would definitely recommend URIMAT waterless urinals to other organisations.”
